This past Friday, as I walked to Starbucks for a mango lime refresher, a cute little cart caught my eye. This student-led pop-up shop, called Couture A La Cart, is a boutique on wheels run by the Fashion Merchandising department. The shop features one-of-a-kind designs.
All of the items were interesting, but I immediately noticed a few familiar t-shirt designs. I picked one up to get a closer look and realized it was from Umano, an Athens-based t-shirt company that recently ceased production. I admired this brand for their social consciousness and support of the arts.
Couture A La Cart acquired Umano’s remaining inventory, adding their own logo to the back for promotional purposes. They currently sell Umano shirts, dresses, and tanks for a discounted price. It goes without saying; I had to get one!
What I love most is that the design matches the aesthetic of Umano, which brings a nice edge to their brand. I think it was a great marketing ploy to integrate this outside brand into their own.
They also feature a Couture A La Cart branded t-shirt line. This year’s design is a simple, city-chic design that currently sells for $18.
It doesn’t stop there.Couture A La Cart also sells goodies such as lip balm, body butter, candles, Calista blue jewelry, and more. And… guess what? Many of these items are crafted by UGA students!
So, I am sure you’re wondering, “How can I check them out?”
Be sure to follow the Couture A La Cart on Instagram @coturealacart to find out exactly where they will be setting up shop throughout the week. Friday, April 7th, 2017, the cart will be near the UGA Arch, according to their Instagram.
Mother’s Day is coming, and there are a variety of gift ideas to choose from. But whether you choose to buy a gift or you simply want to treat yourself, the Umano shirts won’t last long. Be sure to stop by while supplies last! Happy shopping. Enjoy!
I love what Couture A La Cart is doing on campus! Its so cool that they’re student run and student supplied. My roommate is the creator of Calista Blue, and she’s had nothing but good things to say about Couture A La Cart!
Laura,
I love the fact that there is a venue for creatives at UGA, like your roommate, that allows them to showcase their talent.
I loved this article! Such a clever idea to bring the affordable items right to the students, and I love that all this comes from UGA’s own Fashion Merchandising department. It is really smart to get the word out on their own label through the sale of Umano items. Great job!
Thanks Maria!
This is so cute! I love that they bought all of Umano’s stuff so people could still buy what is left!
Lisee,
I thought it was really smart to buy Umano’s merchandise to capitalize off of the love that people already have for that brand AND combine it with their own brand to build greater recognition. Thanks for commenting.
